Mindfulness Lesson: Reminding A Child To Slow Down

REMIND CHILDREN TO SLOW DOWN

SITUATION:  A 5 year old boy goes through life with some serious speed.  They talk fast, run fast, & eat fast.  Mom says “Why can’t you just slow down?”
MINDFUL SOLUTION:  Choose a slow moving object that appeals to the child.  A turtle,
or a snail are common symbols.  Talk to the child about the object.  Get a book from the local library and read about the object.  Allow the child to give it a name, and draw the object.  Create a short story about the creature going slow.  After the slow moving association is formed between the object and the child, you are ready for the next step.

Each morning hand stamp or draw a picture of the object on the child's hand.  If you cannot draw, use a sticker, tattoo, or small picture to  be placed in the child's pocket.  Guide the child to use the stamp as a reminder to slow down their breathing, speech, feet, and hands.  The sticker and tattoo are gentle reminders to slow things down.
